My Insurance Says I Need a Graded Safe | Challenger Safes
If your insurance company has told you that you need a graded safe, you're probably wondering what that actually means—and whether any safe will do.
The short answer? No.
A graded safe has been independently tested and certified to withstand burglary attempts for a specified amount of time. Unlike standard domestic safes, graded safes are built to recognised European security standards and are given an official security grade.
Why do insurers ask for a graded safe?
Insurance companies want to know that high-value items are protected by a safe that's been independently tested—not simply one that looks secure.
Depending on what you're storing, your insurer may require a specific grade before they'll provide cover.
This could include:
- Jewellery
- Cash
- Collectables
- Important documents
- Prescription medicines
- Firearms
- Commercial valuables
What do the grades mean?
The higher the grade, the greater the level of burglary resistance.
Common grades include:
| Grade | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| Grade 0 | Home valuables and small business |
| Grade 1 | Jewellery, pharmacies, retail |
| Grade 2-3 | Higher value commercial protection |
| Grade 4+ | High-risk commercial environments |
Your insurer will usually specify the minimum grade required.
Does size matter?
No.
A larger safe isn't necessarily more secure than a smaller one.
Security comes from the certified construction and testing, not simply the weight or thickness of the steel.
Can I use any safe?
Not if your policy specifies a graded safe.
Many inexpensive safes sold online aren't independently certified and may not satisfy insurance requirements.
Always check that the safe carries recognised certification.
