Quick Guide: 3 Things to Check Before Buying a Safe in NZ
Choosing a home safe doesn't need to be complicated. If you focus on the right questions upfront, you'll save time, money, and end up with a safe that actually does what you need it to.
Here are the three most important things to check before you buy:
1. What Are You Protecting?
Start by listing what you plan to store : jewellery, documents, cash, hard drives, passports. This helps you work out the size you need and the total value you're securing. It also determines whether you need a small domestic safe or something more robust.
2. Fire, Theft, or Both?
Not all safes are built the same. Fire-rated safes are designed to protect contents from heat damage, while burglary-rated safes use thicker steel and reinforced construction to resist break-ins. If you're storing irreplaceable documents, fire protection matters. If it's high-value items like jewellery or cash, burglary resistance is your priority. Many people need both : and that's fine, just make sure the safe you're looking at is rated accordingly.
3. Does It Meet Your Insurance Requirements?
This one gets overlooked, but it's critical. Most home and contents insurers require safes to meet a minimum cash rating to cover what's inside. That rating determines the insured value the safe supports. Before you buy, check with your insurance provider to confirm their requirements : otherwise, you may not be covered in the event of a claim.
